I think it could be either or perhaps both. A triphasic pill such as OTC (three different dosages of hormones over three weeks) is more difficult to skip periods on than is a monophasic, such as Ortho Cyclen which has 21 days of the same dosage of hormones. And, there can be side effects from switching between a brand name and its generic. The generic must meet ‘therapeutic equivalence’ requirements set by the FDA but there can be some very slight differences in ingredients. Irregular bleeding is a common side effect in either case. If you want to skip periods very often you might want to consider switching to a monophasic pill.
