Hi, I have been on Ortho Tri-Cylene for about 2 years now. I was always really good with taking it at the same time and every day, but lately I haven't been(my fault, I know). I recently switched to OTC-Lo for 2 months, and then missed about 15 days, and then started up with my normal plain old OTC. I know this may seem weird but when my boyfriend and I fool around at all and he uses his fingers, I bleed. Not regular blood, but its more watery. I'm just really confused and I am sure it's from the birthcontrol times/missing days. But could somebody please re-assure me!? Should I stop sexual contact until all is well? When will that be, any idea? Please help! Thanks!!

Hi Ellen, welcome!

You don't say how long you have been back on OTC. If it has been less than 3 cycles you might be experiencing a bit of irregular bleeding which can be a common side effect of starting or switching pills. If you are having penile/vaginal intercourse does bleeding also occur then? If not, perhaps he is scratching your vaginal wall, cervix or a small growth with his fingers and causing it to bleed. With your fingers, can you feel anywhere in your vagina that is sore afterward? You and your BF should always wash your hands before starting to play, and his nails should be short, smooth and clean, which will reduce the possibility of your getting an infection, especially if he has scratched your vaginal tissues. I hope that you were using an effective method of contraception during the period that you had stopped your pills. You know too that if you didn't start back on OTC on the first day of your period that you should use back-up for at least the next 7 days of correct pill use. If you have a hard time remembering to take your pills (though 15 days sounds like a bit more than occasional forgetfulness) you could set the alarm on a clock or watch, or a reminder on your cell phone, PDA or computer to remind you at pill time. You might want to mention your bleeding to your doc to see what s/he says. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Good luck,

I also had really bad bleeding ( I mean REALLY bad bleeding ) like that when I was on OTC, as well as really painful sex and cramps. I talked to my doctor about it and switched pills, maybe you should try that as well. And keep trying to remember to take them on time or try a different form of birth control ie: the patch, depo, etc.
