Nuva Ring Questions...

My baby is now 4 weeks old and I need to start really thinking about BC for my 6 week PP OB appointment.
I have always had issues on the BCP with breakthrough bleeding, etc. I tried various BC pills, from OrthoNovum, to OrthoTricyclen, to Yasmin. I have even had a copper IUD to get away from the hormones, but I didn't like that either (periods lasted for 2 weeks and were really heavy the whole year I had the IUD)
I have read that the ring containes a lower dose of hormones than most BCP, which appeals to me. And the fact that you insert it and forget about it for 3 weeks. I just my body isn't BC Retarded and can't handle the hormones in the ring too!!!
So, has anyone had success on the ring? Anyone not like the ring? Why? And side-effects? Weight gain?
TIA!!

Hi,
I read the same thing about the hormone levels. My doctor claimed they were the same level as the patch I'm currently on, but don't know why she said that. I went on to nuvaring's website and researched the differences. I just picked up my prescription and can start in about two weeks, so I'll check in and let you know what I think of it. I sure hope I like
Congratulations on your new baby!
A lot of members posting here like NuvaRing http://www.nuvaring.com/Consumer/index.asp which contains the lowest dose of estrogen (20 mcg) in any combined (estrogen/progestin) method available in the U.S. Some users have complained of excessive discharge while others who had been dry on their previous method were delighted. Our own cl-judie rae has used NuvaRing for more than a year and is delighted with how well it works for her. Judie would ordinarily speak for herself but she is away on vacation at the moment. Another option for you if you have completed your family or want to wait a few years before the next addition is the Mirena IUD. http://www.mirena-us.com/ It is very effective, good for 5 yrs. and continually releases a tiny bit of progestin that lightens and shortens your period. I hope you find an effective method that works for you. Let us know what you decide, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
I thought the Nuvaring had easier-than-expected insertion and removal and I definitely like not having to think about a pill every day at the same time (which I would invariably forget). But, since it was my first month, and my body's still adjusting to the hormones, I experienced light cramping the first few days after insertion, spotting/cramping the week before removal, and then the worst period I've had in ten years. In NuvaRing's defense, though, before I was having very abnormal cycles, sometimes not menstruating for 3 months in a row or more, and so I'm not very used to having a regular period.
So, despite some adjustment pains (also including crying at the drop of a hat), I'm very excited about my future on the NuvaRing. I really think the future months will be better.
Let us know if you decide to try it, and how you like it!
I have only been on the ring for 3 weeks (as of tomorrow, fri). So far I am enjoying it.
No need to remember a pill everyday!
I don't know about any break through bleeding, but I've never had any problems with that before.
I have noticed more discharge since I've started the ring. I think that will take a bit to get used to, but it isn't bad, just.. different I guess.
No weight gain so far yet either, but I've never really had that problem on the pill either.
It has stayed in place the entire time! I was quite worried about it at first, because it isn't that far inside (maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a finger lenthh, sorry if too much info..) but I don't feel it at all.. and DBF hasn't noticed the ring at all during IC.
My main reason for switching to the ring was the pill was causing me to have a very very very low sex drive. (Talk about unhealthy in a relationship!)
I hope you find something that works for you!

I'd recommend it to anyone.
I switched to the ring about 3 months ago and so far I really like it. My periods are SO light. I mean, they last maybe 3 days and I use 2-3 tampons...the rest of the time I use pantyliners. That is a HUGE change from the IUD. My dh can feel the ring during intercourse, but it doesn't bother him. If it bothers you or your dh, you can take it out for up to 3 hours.
I have had very few side effects. I did have sore breasts for a few weeks about 6 weeks or so after I put my first ring in. But it was mild and only lasted 2-3 weeks.
Good luck with your choice and congrats on your new baby!
