freaking out about bc pills

I have been taking birth control pill for the past 6 years straight. And the other day it dawned on me that I have been feeding myself fake hormones everyday for that long. Hormones control the way we feel, act and think, and for the past 6 years I have been taking a little pill that has been controlling me. Does that not freak anyone else out?
I don't want to take them anymore. It seems so unnatural now. Will I be a different person if I go off them? Will my body even know how to act without the help of them?
I don't want to get pregnant. I just wish there was some sort of herbal birth control method that was more natural. Charting my cycle would be natural but not very effective, and my bf does not want to wear condoms because of bad experiences. Depo shot sounds even more unnatural than the bc pills. Spermicide stings. And female condoms sound difficult. So what does that leave me with?
Looks like the only option for me is to just choke down the fake hormones, or start charting. Is there anything else I can do to have effective birth control, without a prescription? A more natural approach, or herbal method?
Thanks,

All effective methods of contraception have their drawbacks. To my knowledge there is not an effective herbal method of birth control available, at least not in the U.S. Actually, the symptothermal method of charting your fertile signs; basal body temperature, cervical position and cervical fluid is extremely effective if all the rules are followed all the time. The Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) uses charting and permits use of barriers during your fertile times while women practicing Natural Family Planning (NFP) chart and abstain during their fertile times. A very good book on the subject is Toni Weschler’s Taking Charge of Your Fertility. FAM/NFP is very effective but it takes discipline to use and time to learn what you fertile signs are telling you.
Have you considered an IUD? They are very effective, low maintenance and, depending on the one used, can last from 5 to 10 years. See: Mirena http://www.mirena-us.com/ which releases a tiny bit of progestin for 5 years Or ParaGard: http://www.paragardiud.com/ The copper-T with no hormones, just copper, that lasts for about 10 years.
I have been using a cervical cap as my primary method and a diaphragm for menses for the last 2 years and am very pleased with how well they have worked for me. There are natural ingredients spermicides if Nonoxynol-9 is a problem. You said you aren’t interested in a D or C but if you change your mind see the info on them in the FAQs on the Board Webpage at: http://pages.ivillage.com/cl-judie_rae/id1.html I hope you find an effective method that works for you.
Good luck
Jill
