I have had my IUD for 2 years and just had my regular pap in February and it was fine. I have been feeling queasy lately so I checked to make sure the strings are still there. There are NO strings!! The information on the IUD says that if the strings are missing then it could have been expelled, but could it be expelled without a person noticing it?

Hi Mary, welcome!

I wouldn't think you could expell an IUD without knowing it but it could be out of place. I don't know for sure. What I do know is that you should see your doctor as soon as you possibly can and use back-up until you can determine what is happening and have it corrected. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

I've had my IUD for about 11 months now...I agree,I don't see how it could be expelled w/o you noticing it or "feeling" something....but I'm not an expert. It might be good to go in and see if your dr can see if it's still there or just out of place a little...I've heard that the strings can get "wrapped" around the cervix...not sure if that's true....

In theory it is possible to expel it and not know it, which is one of the main reasons why you are supposed to check for strings every month. However, I cannot imagine how you could expel an IUD and not feel it poking you on its way out. I had an IUD and had a scare when I couldn't find the strings. I carefully felt all the way around my cervix and finally felt them. They had curled back behind my cervix so that all I could feel was a tiny portion where they emerged from my cervix. If you still cannot feel them, you need to see your doctor. Good luck.

I've had my IUD since Oct. and I too couldn't find the strings one day. They have worked their way up into the cervix...a sonogram shows the IUD is fine. My dr. said that "in theory" you can expel it without knowing...but they have to say that because of lawsuits he says..lol. In reality he says..any woman who can expel that thing and not know it must be taking some really good drugs. Incidentially, I'm a nurse and work with him so he's a bit more open with me than a normal patient.

I think I'm mostly concerned that its shifted out of place. I had more cramping than usual with my last period and I should have checked then. I did have a piece of string come out when I was checking it earlier.

I hope the string's just moved, but the doctor that put it in said that the string would stay in place unless the IUD shifted.

Yep, your doctor should check to see what the situation with your IUD really is. Let us know how you're doing, ok?
