First off thanks for the advice on my Depo question I posted the other day.

At my appointment Thursday my doctor put me on Ortho-Tricyclene(or however you spell it). Ok...how soon is it effective?? I thought it was good after the 1st week. But she said I won't be covered until I finish my first cycle. So...do we need to use back up bc until I finish my first pack or am I still covered with my shot??

She also mentioned the IUD. Are the hormones in the Mirena IUD the same as the shot?? I'm considering getting an IUD instead of the pill. Something has me worried that I'll mess up taking the pill, and end up with another kiddo(something I don't want right now). Also...the copper IUD, do they always make your period heavy?? Or is that what happens with some women, but not all??

Thanks ya'll!!

I would use backup until you finish your first pack of pills just to be extra safe....I have had the MIRENA IUD for about 11 months now and I love it.I had heavy periods before getting it and now I'm down to just spotting 2-3 days each month.I went from using a double pack of overnights pads to using a handful of pantiliners.WOW!! The first 3 months or so after it was put in I had 2 periods each month (sometimes lasting 2 weeks and being 2 weeks apart). This is somewhat the "norm" after getting it put in.Annoying but it will get better. And they were heavier than usual for the first few months but each month after they got lighter and lighter where now I basicly just "spot" for a few days. It's good for 5 years. It's effective from day one until it's taken out.Your dr could give you more information about it but I got lots of good info from the website.

Thank you for your response.

I had a referral put in from my regular doctor to go see a gyn. Hopefully I'll be able to get some more answers then.

Thanks again.
