Broken Nuvaring

I remember reading a while back that someone had a nuvaring break inside of them. I had the same thing happen and just noticed it today. I called them, but of course they are not open on the weekends. So, does anyone know if a broken ring is as effective as a non-broken one? Should I take it out and put in a new one?

Thanks for any answers!

Hi aerandel,

It was I who said I thought the ring was doubled. My apologies... Thanks for posting and setting the record straight.

Hugs,

My question is, how did you come to learn your Ring was broken in the first place!?!?

If you don't feel it, and the company isn't sure yet of pregnancy protection with a broken ring, I sure hope i'm not walking around with a broken one in there!!

I always use condoms anyway, but still....

Yeah, I got the same runaround from them concerning the effectiveness of a broken ring.

I got my ring out by myself. The reason I noticed it was broken is because it was really low in my vagina and felt funny. When I reached in to push it back up, I noticed it felt different and found it was broken. So I didn't have any trouble getting mine out myself.

The Nuvaring people wanted my ring as evidence as well, but I had already thrown it out by the time I talked to them. The lady on the phone said they'd had quite a few calls about broken rings recently.

I do wonder if it is the yeast infection cream...that seems to be what we both have in common, huh? It does say on their patient information that it is okay to use yeast infection creams, but who knows?

Thanks for posting.

Since there seem to be a lot breaking recently, I wonder if it was a bad production lot, and that maybe the plastic was weak in one area or something.

I also agree with what a previous poster said about effectiveness -- since the hormones are embedded in the plastic, and it's not like there's a tube somewhere holding them, breaking the ring shouldn't have any effect at all. but since they probably haven't done efficacy testing for the broken rings they can't legally claim that it's still effective. once it's broken it's no longer being used in the FDA-approved manner, and they can't guarantee it'll still work, even though it probably will. I bet you guys have nothing to worry about.

They called me back today and asked for the lot number and expiration date of my broken ring, so you might be right about a bad production lot. They also want me to mail my broken ring to them, so I guess they want to study it in more detail!

Hi! I knew that my ring was broken because I felt it sliding down and it felt funny so I went to the bathroom to try to push it back up and I could feel the ends of it. It came apart at the "seam" where it was put together. It was an uncomfortable feeling, I think if your ring broke you would notice it because it starts to slide out and you can feel the ends poking you. To the original poster, I'm glad you were able to get your ring out by yourself! Planned Parenthood woudln't even let me try to take it out, they insisted on doing it for me and they hand a really hard time finding it and getting it out. It really hurt when they finally got it out of there, and it was definately broken, it was in a straight line when they took it out. Organon ended up giving me 3 coupons for free nuvarings and planned parenthood replaced the defective one so I didn't have to pay again for the rest of that month. So it worked out alright for me.
