Could I Be Pregnant?

Hey everyone...

I used to be on the Cosmo boards, but I haven't been on in awhile, so I'm trying to get back into the swing of things.

So, why not come back with a bang?

I HAVE A PROBLEM.

Thursday June 24, I had sex with my boyfriend. As soon as I got back to my room, I realized I hadn't taken Wednesday or Thursday's pill. I took both of those immediately along with another pill from an extra pack I had. I then took one Friday morning, Sat, and Sun (as usual). However, I got sick to my stomach earlier today (which may be indigestion or gas or something), and I started thinking back to Thursday. I didn't take a morning after pill 1, because I didn't have one, and 2, because I was with my parents Fri, Sat, and Sun (and they don't know we're having sex--and they would be against it if they did know--I'm 18). So my problem is this-- My last BC Pill is this coming Saturday. So, if I do start my period, it won't be til Tues or Wed of next week. How soon after I have sex should I wait til I take a pregnancy test? Could my makeshift BC dosage work? What's the deal?

I'm really scared right now because I've heard of people getting pregnant from just missing one day (my mom did) and then having a miscarriage from continuing the pill. I don't want to be pregnant and my BF and I have decided that if I do, we'll go to an abortion clinic where we live and get an abortion, if I don't miscarry.

Anyway, if anyone can help at all, it would be greatly appreciated.

Awaiting your help...

Hi apanda, welcome!

If you got sick within 2 hours after taking your pill then that counts as a missed pill. Taking your forgotten pills as soon as you remembered them is good but forgetting 2 in a row could have put you at considerable risk. If you forget or vomit up a pill you should use backup until you have had at least 7 days of correct pill usage. Taking BCPs when pg won’t harm the fetus but anyone finding themselves pregnant and on the pill should stop taking them. With some test kits you can test as soon as 10 days after the event but, if you can, it is probably better to wait until you are late. To help you remember to take your pills on time you can set the alarm on a clock or watch or set a reminder message on your cell phone, PDA or computer to help remind you. You might want to consider switching to NuvaRing, http://www.nuvaring.com/Consumer/index.asp a vaginal ring that is worn for 3 weeks and removed for one for your period. It is much lower maintenance than pills and most members posting about it seem to like it. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Good luck,

So, does anyone have any advice on what to do til then? My last BC Pill is on Saturday, and I should start my period on Tuesday or Wednesday. I don't know what to do in the mean time besides taking my pills and keeping calm.

I don't want to be pregnant, so the thought of it is making me really nervous.

Any suggestions?

You might want to consider emergency contraception. It is most effective if taken within the first 72 hours after the event but is still somewhat effective for up to 5 days. You might still have time. Talk to your doc or your local Planned Parenthood clinic http://www.plannedparenthood.org/Zip.htm about EC and look at the information on the EC site at http://ec.princeton.edu/. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Just to clarify, emergency contraception is NOT RU486 ("the abortion pill"). it does not cause an abortion.

Emergency contraception is a combination of birth control pill doses that prevent a fertilized egg from implanting into the uterus. it prevents a pregnancy from ever happening, it DOES NOT cause an abortion.

I feel that comment was unnecessary to make. The poster was simply stating what her options were if she were to become pregnant. It is her free will to make her own choices. On this board, we do not discrimate others for their opinions. We all share different views, but that does not mean that we should attack others when we do not agree. I feel your comment was out of line. I'd strongly suggest reading the terms and agreements on iVillage. Personal attacks like that are not welcome and are in violation of this board.

I agree and have asked that the post be deleted.
