how effective are just condoms?

OK, where to begin *deep breath* Two weeks ago I took the first pill of my pack twelve hours late. Then last Sunday when I went to take my pill I realized that somehow I had missed taking one during the week (I have no idea when, but there was just an extra pill in there) so I took two at the same time. I realized that not using back-up would be risky so I have been very careful about using condoms. But I am seriously the most paranoid person in the world, so is there a good enough chance that I ovulated that I shouldn't be having sex at all right now? What should I do, just continue with my pack or start over? Starting last night, I have had seven active pills in a row on time.

In answer to the title of your post, condoms, by themselves are about 85% effective in ‘typical use.’ That can be improved to 98% if used correctly and consistently. With late and missing pills no one can say what your chances of becoming pg are but the effectiveness of your pills is less than their maximum of 98-99% when taken correctly. If you have a hard time remembering to take your pills you could set the alarm on a clock or watch, or a reminder on your cell phone, PDA or computer to remind you at pill time. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
