Hi, I just discovered your board and wish I found it some time ago...

Here's my deal: I was on a triphasic pill for 5 years before getting pregnant with ds #1. After he was born, I went back on the pill and continued for 18 months, but noticed that I started having moodswings with the usage. After ds#2 was born, I once again went back on the pill and noticed even more intense moodswings (snapping at dh and ds#1 and some depression)...this started within days of re-starting the pill. I stopped taking it immediately and I was back to "normal" in about 2 days.

Now, here I sit bc-free, but want to find something to take...we've been using the oh-so-stupid withdrawl method...

Has anyone else been in my shoes or can anyone tell me about a bc method that won't cause such strong mood swings or reactions? (I'd rather be on something hormonal). What about the newer low-dose pills?

I was on a low dose "mini pill"-MICRONOR-after my son was born in 2002.It was the only "pill" my dr would put me on due to my chronic high blood pressure problem...I did not like it.I didn't notice any mood swings or anything, but my periods weren't predictable....they were "heavier and clottier" than usual. But everyone has different reactions to different pills.I know there are more mini pills than just the one I was on-maybe someone else can help with that issue.I was on Micronor for 8 months and then I got the Mirena IUD and I love it....

It seems like different women experience mood swings and irritability on a lot of different pills. Since you've had this problem well after 3 months on your triphasic I'm going to guess that trying to stick it out this time won't help you any. You might want to try Yasmin, a lot of women are very happy with it. It has a lower potency progestin that's different from the other ones on the market. This might be something to talk to your doctor about, since he/she can give the best educated guess about which pills will cause you the least mood trouble.

For what it's worth, many women experience mood and anxiety problems on the pill. I'm one of them, and over the years it got worse and worse on OTC, I'm now on my 10th week of Seasonale (same formulation as nordette, progestin is levonorgestrel) and my mood is just starting to stabilize. Hopefully you can find something that works for you, too.

Hi mom2jacknsam, welcome!

You might also want to consider NuvaRing. It's a vaginal ring worn for 3 weeks and removed for one for your period. It has the lowest dose of estrogen (20 mcg) of any combined method in the U.S. Most of the users posting here seem to like it. I hope you find an effective method that works well for you. Let us know what you decide, ok?

Good luck,

      Jill
