Hi All

I’m 30 and new to BC and considering trying Mirena IUD. I have 2 boys (2 1/2 years and 8 months) and my husband and I are still negotiating number 3, he really wants a girl. I did try low dose pill about 7 years ago but I had mood swings and low sex drive and went off of it after 2 months. Recently after having my son my doctor put me on the mini-pill for 3 months and I didn’t really notice many changes. After that my doctor did put me on Yasmin but I stopped after a week because I was having health issues not related to BC. Now after 8 months I would like to have a more reliable BC. I have read many IUD horror stories and would hope they are few and far between. I guess I just want some reinsurance that I’m doing the right thing. Any advice would be a big help. Thanks for listening.

Hi Roxy,

I had Mirena fitted a week ago today, as a last resort for treatment for heavy and painful periods. I've only had it a week, but so far it seems worth it. I had some spotting the day it was put in, and I did have bad pain the day it was put in, then not the following day but the day after, and this pain is gradually wearing off, but at its worst has been as bad as my normal period pain, if that makes sense!

My period has now started (yesterday) and so far seems to be the lightest period I've ever had!

I've had a bad history of side effects from BC and so far I don't seem to be suffering the same with Mirena. I know that it's early days and anything could change in 4 years and 51 weeks, but normally by now I'd be suffering a fair bit.

I haven't had children and insertion wasn't any worse than having a smear test.

Hope that makes sense and hope it helps a bit.

hi roxy!

I had the mirena put in about 3 days ago. THe doc said it was best to put it in during the cycle. (eww gross!) but heres what happened...they took a pap to make sure it came back regular. i took a pregnancy test the day of insertion to make sure there are no pregnancies, then she cleaned off the cervix a few times swiping it with some swabs...then she inserted a tube to measure where the cervix is located...then she inserted Mirena (wierd looking insertion device) there was no intense pain. then she cut the strings ( my BF said it was a good thing I doidnt see those scissors) she then checked any pain and dbl checked the IUD was straight

this is the last day of myt period and its really light as normal and ive had some minor cramping at work...Im a little scared to have sex but ill let u know what happens!

I have had the mirena IUD for about 11 months now and absolutely love it.I had painful, heavy, clotty periods.I went from using a double pack of kotex overnights each month to using just a few pantiliners now each month.WOW!!! It can stop periods for some women and this is the first month I haven't had one.It wasn't too awfully painful when it was put in (my dr used a deadening shot) but I did feel LOTS and LOTS of pressure and had cramps for a few days afterwards-sometimes bad but ibuprofen helped. The first 3 months I was on it I had 2 periods each month sometimes lasting 2 weeks and coming 2 weeks apart. That's somewhat normal. But after that each month each period was lighter and lighter.I don't really have any cramps now-just a few twinges now and then around "that time of the month".It was a little pricey $400+ but it is good for 5 years. My dr cut the "string" very short and my dh doesn't feel it during sex.good luck.hope you find something that works for you.I love the mirena and when it's time to replace it I plan on getting another one.
