what do you think.....

Hello, all... In september I will have had my Mirena IUD in for 2 years and I really like it. The only thing is last november 11/03 was my last period. I have completely stopped having them. My gyno, which is a guy says its perfectly okay and to go without periods and I should be grateful. ha ha ha. My normal doctor, who is female says this bothers her. She ran some blood tests but really thinks I should be having periods. So what does anyone think? I was reading an article about missing periods and I know that you can also not have periods say if you skip that week of pills but how long is it good for to go without? Besides getting symptoms every month nothing shows up. I do feel yucky sometimes and excuse the grossness but it seems that a womens body should be doing that natural "sluffing" if you would and what happens to it if its not coming out? Does it get reabsorbed back in your body? Any opinion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Dianne

In the booklet that came with my Mirena it states:
"Mirena will affect your menstrual cycle. You might experience spotting, shorter or longer periods, painful periods, lighter periods or no periods at all."
"Overall you are likely to have fewer days bleeding in each month and you might eventually have no periods at all. This is due to the effect of the hormone (levonorgestrel) on the lining of the uterus."
So yes, it is normal. I think (when I was researching it before I had it inserted) it says 20% of women find their periods stop.
I think if there's no bleeding for 6 weeks, sometimes a pregnancy test is done, but if that is negative normally they just leave it and assume Mirena is working to thin the lining of the uterus. It's okay to go without because the uterus lining isn't building up. It's only a problem if the lining is building up, but Mirena stops this from happening.
Personally, I can't wait to get rid of my horrendous periods! Hope mine stop soon, although I don't mind a bit of spotting either.
Hope that helps,
~Lys~
