zoloft and birth control

Hello,

I am on ortho tri cyclen, and I was on Zoloft, but I quit taking zoloft recently b/c it wasn't helping me. I just recently had a miscarriage, and I was really surprised and confused and upset about that being that I'm on birth control and took it at the same time every day, and I was just upset that i had a miscarriage anyway. Then, my friend told me that she read somewhere that Zoloft sometimes interfers with birth control and that might be why I became pregnant and had a miscarriage. So my question is, is it true that Zoloft may interfer with birth control, or does it vary depending upon each woman, or is it all a myth?

Thanks so much!

Hi Lora, welcome!

Oh sweetie, I am so sorry about your loss! Oral contraceptives are not 100% effective even when taken correctly, but they are close. Had you been sick and vomited or has diarrhea within 2 hours after taking your pill or are you on any supplements that might have reduced your pills effectiveness? At a glance I can find nothing in the Zoloft prescribing information http://www.zoloft.com/index.asp?pageid=43 that cautions about its use with hormonal contraceptives but there is a caution to alert you doctor if you become pg or plan on becoming pg while on Zoloft. If I were you I’d ask your doctor and pharmacist your question and see what they say. I know this is a bad time for you. You are in my prayers.
