Weight and the pill

I know this has been coming up a lot lately, but I do have to ask. I've been on a diet for over three weeks, changing my eating habits, exercise habits, and water intake. Nothing has worked despite all these changes. Cuold my pill be causing me to retain water or something else pertaining to problems with weight loss. Always, in the past, the method I'm currently using has produced some results. If its a possibility its my pill, I'm definately willing to switch or get off it all together. Thanks for your time.

Hi Melissa, welcome back!

The studies that have been done concerning hormonal contraceptives and weight gain haven’t found any conclusive link. However, I think some hormones can affect the appetite or how we metabolize foods in some women. Are you seeing any change in your measurements, sliming down while weighing the same? As fat is converted to muscle there may be a delay before you see any weight loss. If you suspect water retention as a possibility then you might want to consider Yasmin which has a progestin that is supposed to reduce water retention. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Good luck,

      Jill

Unfortunately I havent noticed any change in measurments or anything (quite discouraging I might add). I'm on OTC lo right now and can't switch until late august/early semptember when Im back at school. However, since Im currently not in a huge need for the pill, I might seriously consider getting off it. I never found it so hard to start a diet before the pill..thanks again

I agree with Jill that hormones can affect metabolism. I stopped the pill in August of 2003 (I weighed 155 lbs.) and immediately (yes, immediately) lost 5 lbs. By, Thanksgiving, I had weighed 145. With that I decided to start walking most days (instead of just 3 times a week) and I started drinking 8 glasses of water a day. I didnt deny myself anything, just watched my portions. Today I weighed in at 130! While on the pill, for 20 years minus 2 pregnancies, I tried every diet imaginable- including what I am doing now. And didnt lose a pound. One thing I do know is that for me, pills with a higher progestin didnt seem to make me gain as much weight, though they made me tired and anxious. Anyway, just my 2 cents!
