IUD and pregnancy

Hi!

I have been using the IUD for the past two years and have had no problems so far. I just have a doubt, though - is it possible to get pregnant whilst the IUD is still in? I mean, my period is late this month and so far I haven't got any indication of it coming any time soon and am beginning to worry.

Cheers

Hi lavanya1307, welcome!

No method is 100% effective except abstinence so it is possible to become pg with an IUD inserted but it is very unlikely. A properly positioned IUD is more than 99% effective so you should be quite safe. Can you feel the strings? Have you been sick or under stress recently? That sort of thing can often delay ovulation. As we age our cycles begin to change and it is possible to have an anovulary cycle and AF just not show so perhaps that is what is happening. Also if you have an IUD with progestin in it, such as Mirena then that lightens, shortens could stop some wearer’s periods. If AF doesn't arrive in a week I think I would test just to see where you are. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

Hugs,

I'm in the same situation as you're in.I've had the mirena about 11 months and haven't had a oeriod since may....I might test this week if AF doen't show...more than likely I'm one of the women who stop having periods with the mirena--at least that's what I'm telling myself....

Hi Jill!

Thanks for the reply - same goes to mrs frazier too.

I am going to my doc today just to see if all's well inside me :) I could still feel the strings but the scaredy part of me thinks that I can feel a lot more of the strings than I normally do. Is it possible the dreadful thing has moved? Could that cause a preg?

Ciao

Hi lavanya1307,

It is possible for an IUD to move. That's why the strings are there, so the user can notice changes in its position. Let us know what your doctor says, ok?

my goodness...I did a string check last night and I thought I felt ALOT more than usual too...Usually I have to stretch my finger really hard to be able to feel the tip of the string....I could feel about 1-2 inches of it last night...Really freaked my out at first.I planned on going to my gyno today.I did another string check in the shower this morning and I could only feel about the tip....WEIRD....I know that the string can "shift" and all...but that much? I bought a test today and unless I change my mind I'll be testing in the morning. Then depending on how that goes I might have to make that dr visit....I don't feel "sick" or anything-but I didn't get sick until the 4th month or so with my previous pregnancy.....How odd that we're having so much of the same concerns and things happening....

How are you doing? Have you tested? I am in the same situation as you are....have the IUD and no period this month.I did a test this morning and got a BIG NEGATIVE.Which is a big relief.I didn't tell DH I was late because he would stress out so I've been carrying this question around for a few weeks.I'm glad I KNOW now...I'm on several meds that aren't meant for pregnant ladies and my health isn't at a place where we want pregnancy right now....maybe in a few years but not right now.I had a very complicated dangerous pregnancy in 2002....Anyway I hope you get the answer you need for your situation.

Good for you. Mrs. F.!

I do understand, but I'm so sorry you had to keep your situation to yourself.

Hi Jill & Mrs F,

Well I went to see my doc yday and she told me to calm down and relax. Like Jill suggested, she said stress could put off the period. My two year old has been giving me big time stress by refusing food point blank and as he usually eats a decent amount, I was freaking out - add this IUD bit, and I was going near mental!

reg my q abt feeling lot more of the threads, mrs f, she said it is cos the womb contracts and expands - before and during a period. as long as one can feel the threads, it is ok. now, it looks like my period will finally arrive later in the day. i can feel it!

Dont u worry mrs f - everything works out in the end - even the dodgy bits of life have a way of working out. i am somewhat overweight and had my baby two -ish years back. now i want to do something for myself u know - like study, work etc. and our financial sitch isnt so great that we can afford two kids either, so i can empathise with what u are going thru. chin up!

hey mrs f and jill - thanks a bunch!!

ciao
