Ooops, I think I posted to the wrong section.

Here goes...

Do diet pills (trim spa, etc.) decrease the effectiveness of oral or any type of pregnancy contraceptions?

Thanks...

Hi va930, welcome!

Weight reduction supplements don't have to be approved by the FDA so there have been no clinical trials to check for drug interactions. If the supplement speeds up your metabolism it could cause the hormones in your pills to be less effective. Since there is really no way to tell if they interfere or not, this board recommends that women using hormonal contraceptives not take weight reduction supplements.

Good luck,

Jill is totally on with this--not only does the lack of FDA regulation get diet pill purveyors off the hook as far as drug interactions go, but it also gets them out of proving that their products are actually safe and EFFECTIVE. The only tried-and-true means of permanent and safe weight loss is through diet and exercise. All of the other fad diets and expensive pills and cabbage soup and grapefruit and even surgeries won't keep weight off permanently without a change in eating and exercise habits. You've heard there's no free lunch, right? That applies here too. ;)

Because we don't know and the only way to find out is to take the two together and see if you get pregnant, we advise pill users to either consult with their doctors and pharmacists or to just save their money.
