IUD Hopeful

Hello ladies,

I have a few quick questions about getting a copper IUD.

BCP do not work for me, and I am looking for a long term BC method. The only stipulation is that I am 20 years old (and have not had children). I find it imperative that I be on some form of long-term BC that does not involve hormonal methods. I am worried and nervous that I won't be able to get one. Do you think I will be denied the chance to get an IUD? Does anyone have any similar stories? I need as much information and advice as you can give me!

Much thanks!

I was in a similar situation. I was 24 with no children when I had my IUD put in a few months ago. I decided to go with the copper IUD as I did not like hormones (and they did not like me). My primary care doctor refered me to a GYN at a women's health center. I met with the GYN and she answered my questions and gave me information on both type of IUDs. They had no problems with my age or that I hadn't had any children. She told me that it can be a little more painful to put in if you haven't had children, and that there is a higher chance that you will expel it. As long as I was OK with the risks she was willing to put it in.

The procdure wasn't bad, very painful cramps for less than a min. The rest of the day I had cramps but then I was back to normal.

I love my IUD!! I love never thinking about it, and it is really side-effect free for me. I had bad cramping with my first period but so far none with this second period. I'll be happy to answer any of your questions if I can.

Good Luck!

I have a Paraguard (non-hormonial) IUD, I was told the dr's prefer you to have a child first but it's not necessary. I think that you should really consider it because it's the best methiod of BC I've ever used. I'm very happy with mine. A little tender on insertion and since then, I haven't had much cramps or pain since. It was well worth it. I have had one child, but I doubt that made much of a difference.
