Sex after an IUD insertion

Hi Everyone,

I had a Paragard IUD inserted 2 days ago and so far I haven't had any problems. I just feel a little bloated and tender like I do when I feel my period is coming on. I've just read some posts about women who have bled for months after insertion and it's kind of freaking me out:( I will have a hard time with that if it becomes my circumstance. Anyway, one of the things I didn't ask my ob/gyn before she left for vacation is how long I should wait to have sex. I haven't been able to find anything about it on message boards but I might not be looking in the right place. Do any of you know?

Thank you so much:)

Hi dragonfly745, welcome!

You could call your doctor's office and speak to the nurse. See what she says the doctor's advice would be. You can ordinarily have IC immediately after insertion and be protected but there may be some circumstances, depending on your med. history, where you doc would prefer you to wait a few days. I hope you like your ParaGard. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

Good luck,

Not sure...my dr didn't say I had to wait any time....whenever you feel comfy (not cramping or hurting) I guess....since it's effective from day one of being put in....I had heavier periods the first 3 months after getting it.I had 2 periods each month lasting 2 weeks and coming 2 weeks apart....I didn't have a period for 3 months straight....After that they each got lighter.I spotted a few days each month for a while but now I haven't had a period since May (And I'm NOT pregnant)....I love it!!

I am very happy with my Paragard IUD. It is effective right away. My doctor told me when ever I felt ready was fine. No need to wait.

Hey Dragonfly, excellent question!

Like Jill said, you might want to call your Dr's office just to see if there were any special provisions concerning waiting to have intercourse. Even if your Dr has gone on vacation, I'm sure that if you called (or went in person), they could look in your file and let you know if anything was written down about it.

Just as a general rule of thumb, wait until your body as started to accept it's new little copper buddy. Make sure you aren't spotting/cramping at all when you have a go of it, and be sure to let your partner know he needs to be gentle.

Happy humping! :P

Hi Ladies,

Thank you so much for your feedback! Your words have been very helpful. I will take your advice and call the doc's office on Monday just to make sure, but I have a feeling that I'll hear what you've said....... that it's okay as soon as I feel comfortable. I am feeling tremendously better today (not that it was all that bad before) and have had no cramping at all. I wish my DBF was not away this weekend because, well, you know;)

I'll let you know any additional thoughts on the Paragard IUD and I will certainly be looking for more of your posts elsewhere on the boards. Thanks again and have a great weekend!

~E

P.S. Thanks for the well wishes, Jenn. I've never been wished Happy Humping before! LOL:)
