I was just wondering what the chances of pregnancy are when using two (2) methods of birth control simultaneously. Specifically, I'm on the pill and he has had a vasectomy (years ago). I'm not worried, I was just curious. If any one has any thoughts, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I have to apologize, this is my first time on here and I believe I posted this in the wrong section. I thought I was in the Birth Control section and it shows up in the Off Topic section. Again, I apologize.

Hi lizzie24601 welcome!

Theoretically, the effectiveness of multiple methods should be the product of the individual methods. A vasectomy is 99.5-99.9% effective and the (combined pill) is 92-99.7% effective. These figures are from the Planned Parenthood site: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/bc/cchoices.html Using the low end figures of .5% chance from a vasectomy and 8% chance (typical use) from the pill the combined chance of pregnancy is .0625%, if I’ve done the math correctly. Is there any thought that he should have a sperm check?

Good luck,
