Stopping your periods

I heard that you can take the bith control pills to stop your periods - to do this you are to continually take the pill, starting a new pack when you are supposed to be taking the "reminder" pills (at the time of your period). This did not seem healthy to me, as I believe that your cycle is natural, it is something that is supposed to happen, you should not be preventing it. Has anyone heard of this, or know any risks involved in taking the pill continuously like this, or is this actually ok? Any information is appreciated, thanks :)

Hi lystie114, welcome!

You should talk with your doctor before you try skipping periods but it is safe and many women have been doing it successfully with standard 21/7 regimen pills. It usually works best on a monophasic pill, one that has the same dosage of hormones in all 21 active pills. There is even a new extended cycle pill out now called Seasonale that comes in an 84/7 regimen so that a user has only 4 periods a year. Thanks for stopping by and asking.
