missed 2 pills this week - spermicide?

hi. I usually take my BCP at midnight, but twice this week I forgot and took it 7 or 8 hours later (the next morning, then the following pill that night at midnight as usual). Do I need a backup birth control method? Spermicide? For religious reasons my husband and I do not use condoms.

Dr., nurse, or practitioner answer only please.

Hi canadababe1978, welcome!

This board doesn’t offer professional advice but we do share knowledge and experiences. This board considers taking a pill 8 or more hours late as a miss. You should use back-up for at least 7 days of correct pill usage after each miss. When did you have IC in relation to your missed pills? If you had IC after missing your pills and if more than 72 hours hasn’t passed since the IC in question, you might want to consider emergency contraception. See the EC site at: http://ec.princeton.edu/

A spermicide gel, cream, film, suppository or sponge isn’t as effective alone as when used with a barrier such as a condom, diaphragm or cap but if that is your only option then use it. If you are having trouble remembering at pill-time you can set the alarm on a clock or watch or set a reminder massage on your cell phone, PDA or computer. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Good luck,

Hi there.

Just some advice that might be helpful - I'm a pharmacist and thought I could help a little. With your pills you should have a pamphlet that explains what to do if you miss pills during each week. Some pills (those with just progestin hormone in it) must be taken the same time each day as the timing is important because they only have the 1 hormone. the pills with progestin and estrogen in them give you a little more lee-way to be late with time but its still important to take them the same time each day. since i don't know what you take, I can't advise you more than that. like i said, check your info sheet or call your pharmacy if you don't have it - they can help you..... some times you are ok depending of your pill brand, what week you are in, and how many pills you missed. all of these are factors. you should keep this info somewhere so you always know what to do in the future..... good luck, hope i could help a little!

take care.
