Contraception prior to TTC

I've been on Implanon for the last 2 1/2 years (kind of like Norplant) and am planning to start TTC in 18 months or so. I'd like to get the Implanon out 'cause of the irregular bleeds and to get my body used to having natural hormonal cycles again before I start TTC.

Now, in terms of contraception, I'm planning to use condoms, but are there any other good non-hormonal methods that I can use in addition to increase effectiveness? I tend to find spermicides really irritating so I'd rather not try those.

Thanks, Sarah

Hi Sarah, welcome!

You could try using another barrier such as a diaphragm or cervical cap in addition to condoms. However, for maximum effectiveness a D or C should be used with a good spermicide. The sponge might be an option for you, but it is really a spermicide delivery device so if you have an allergy to spermicide that might not work. If it is just the messiness of spermicide that is a turnoff then the sponge might be what you are looking for. If you live outside the U.S. a short term IUD might be a method that you would like. There is a copper IUD called Nova-T that is effective for 2 ½ years. It is available in Canada and perhaps elsewhere. The only IUDs available in the U.S. are effective for 5-10 years, depending on the type. If you are interested in knowing more about diaphragms or caps you can read the post about them in the FAQ folder at the top of the board. Let us know what you decide, ok?

Good luck

Welcome Suzy!

Good idea giving those hormones time to exit your body before ttc! I did they same thing with the pill. I found spermicides irritating also. We only used condoms and that worked fine. You could compare different brands of spermicides and see which one has the lowest amount of the spermicide (or are they all the same??) and see if it is less irritating. I think Jill has a "recipe" for a natural spermicide using aloe and lemon juice(try the search above).

On a side note, start taking vitamins so to prepare your body for pregnancy. A multivitamin containing 400mcg of folic acid will be fine. Or, you can buy prenatal vitamins over the counter(or you dr could give you an rx for some). I have been taking prenatal vitamins since trying to conceive my first child over 9 years ago and still do!

I hope this helps! Good luck with everything and best wishes on ttc!
