Anyone have the copper IUD?

I had a baby 6 weeks ago and would like to use a non hormonal type of birth control.

I'm leading towards the copper IUD, if any of you have it I'd love to hear what you think of it! THANKS.

Also, once inserted do you have to go back for a follow up to make sure it's in the right place? Can you not have sex during that time?

I have the copper IUD, paragard, and love it.

You need to go back after your first cycle to make sure it is still in place. (It is just a simple exam less than 5 minutes). The IUD is effective immedatly and there is no waiting period. When ever you feel ready you can go for it. My cervix was tender for a few days so we had to take in easy but no problems.

I love not having hormones in me, I feel so much better. The IUD is also so low maintance and I never have to worry about it. You just need to feel for the strings every month to make sure it is still in place.

My first period was heavy and painful, but not terrible. My second period was pain free (as they always used to be) but I had about a week of light spotting before I got my period. My doctor says give it at least a few cycles to let my body adjust.

Good luck in finding the right BC for you!

I too have the Paraguard IUD. I've had it since May and I love it. I used to be on hormones when I was younger but they were really bad for me. After I had my son, I decided I didn't ever want to go on hormones again. I couldn't afford the IUD - no insurance - so we used condoms for a couple of years... Ick. But then I finally got a good job with benny's and decided to finally get that IUD. Also, my SO really liked the IUD methiod for the side benefit that he can feel the string during sex and he LOVES that feeling. Anyway, to make a long story even longer... LOL. I love it. My first period after the insertion was heavy and painful, my second (most recent) was just like normal. So I'd say go for it... and good luck with your search and your choice.
