Hello! I started back up on taking birth control pills about 2 weeks ago after being off of them for 7 months. I did the Sunday start but I actually got my period the saturday before, so when I started it on Sunday, it was already into the second day of my period. I remember my gyn. telling me once to start the pill the sunday after you get your period, so I figured it worked out good because I had just gotten my period. Anyway, me and my bf had sex last night and he came in me. Am I protected since I've been on it for about 2 weeks? Thanks!!

DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR GYNO TELLING YOU THAT THE PILL DOESN'T TAKE FULL EFFECT FOR ATLEAST A MONTH. I WAS IN YOUR EXACT SITUATION WHEN I STARTED THE PILL.. THE SEX.. ALL THAT. TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY I HAVEN'T BEEN WONDERING AM I PG. BEST THING TO DO IS WAIT FOR YOUR TIME OF THE MONTH... IF YOUR LIL FRIEND DOESN''T COME TAKE A HPT... B/C YES YOUR DEFINATLLY AT RISK TO BEING PREGNANT.

BEST WISHES AND LET ME KNOW!!

Acutally, she pretty much just told me to use back-up the first week? And I've been on it for almost 2 weeks now, so I thought it would be ok?

When I started the pill, the doctor told me it would probably be effective after a week, but I should use protection for the first full month since my body was getting used to the pill. I think that you should be alright though.

By the way...I know everyone is different, but when do you usually ovulate. I'm trying to figure out if I'd be safe anyway? The first day of my cycle was July 3rd and I started the pill on july 4th.

Hi nchristinzio, welcome back!

If you have been taking your pills correctly you should be fine. If you start your pills on the first day of your period you should be protected immediately. If you start later than the first day you are protected after 7 days of correct pill use. That information is in the Patient Information leaflet that comes with each pack of pills. This board usually recommends that you use back-up for the entire first cycle in order to give yourself time to get into the habit of taking your pills correctly (see the post in the FAQs about the things to do and watch for) before you rely totally on your pills for protection. If you've been good about taking your pills you should be ok.

Good luck,

Hi Jill! Well, I was on the pill before and did the sunday start. This time, I did the same thing but I actually got my period the day (saturday) before I started my pill. So, I thought maybe I'd be even more protected since I was taking the pill the whole week I had my period. I've been taking the pill the same time every night for the past week and a half so hopefully it is effective now. Anyway, you put my mind at ease now. I feel better!
