Wanting to get pregnant

My husband and I are thinking about trying to have a child in Septemeber. Right now I am on the patch. I called the doctor's office to see how long you needed to be off of it.They told me 2 - 3 months but not much else. Does anyone have any other helpful information or tips? Do we need to be using backup protection in the meantime? I know this might seem naive, but this would be my first child so I am new to this.

You could do fertility awareness with a backup method while you are learning. That way once you are ready you will have an easier time conceiving :)

Hi rinny0525, welcome!

You absolutely should be using backup if you don’t want to begin TTC until September! Some women coming off hormonal contraceptives ovulate right away, others can take several months. I’m not trying to chase you away, you’re welcome to stay as long as you want, but if you’re interested, iVillage Parents Place has some great TTC boards at:

Hi and welcome!

My first, and what I believe to be a very important tip, is to start taking a multivitamin (or even a prenatal vitamin) right now if you arent already.

One reason I feel they say to wait 2-3 months after stopping hormonal birth control is it gives your body time to get back into the swing of things. You may not ovulate right off the bat when stopping the pill; though many do. During these 2-3 months, you can get to know your body. You can detect changes in your cervical position, cervical mucus, and sex drive(mine increases dramatically right before and during ovulation!). This way you can better predict ovulation thus making sure you try to conceive at that time! You can buy or check out a book at the library on fertitily or trying to conceive. Hope this helps! Best wishes on ttc!

Josie

PS also, limit caffeine, eat right, dont consume alcohol, dont smoke, be careful of what medications you take(check with your dr on what he says is safe). And it may benefit if your husband wears loose underwear (boxers). Just some extras to help have a healthy baby!

I would say stop using the patch and use condoms in the meantime. That way you have a some time to get it out of your body. I am to ttc. I would try charting your cycles. Here is a site you can do it on.

I am in a similar situation. I loved the convenience of the patch but I quit the OE patch 4 months ago in hopes of ttc with my new DH. Here we are 4 months after quitting and we still are ttc... My first cycle after stopping was like 33d, then I had a 19d, now the past 2 cycles have been a 'perfect' 28d. I did the opk last month and I did ovulate on day 12/13. So I am back to ovulating, but I haven't experienced the whole EWM phenomenon like everyone talks about... I did read that having all that globby, copious amounts of mucous aren't necessary for conception anyway. I haven't had those 'copious amounts'!! (Maybe this is also a result of the patch--????)

Hopefully, since we know that I am ovulating, we have the timing right, cycle is a perfect 18, we know the days to have babymakin' sex, this will be our month!!?? My OD will be Tues Aug 17 for our best chances. This is baby #2 for me, #1 for DH. All this 'failure' is extremely hard on DH as he considers it HIS fault since I have had a successful pg already. I still wonder about the risidual effects of the patch, but have been unable to locate much info on the subject of "ttc after bc"-- esp the patch. ANYONE out there with more info on the subject? How long does it usually take to get pg after going off the Ortho Evra patch? please let me know!

THANKS! Goatster74
