Last month, I missed a pill and as a result, I started bleeding. I didn't stop until about three days before my regular period time, which I had as well. This month, I took the wrong pill at the wrong time (Sat. instead of Sun.) and as a result, I have started bleeding. I am worried that I will bleed again for almost the rest of the month. I have also been stressed about pregnancy, especially yesterday and the couple days before that when my stomach was feeling unusually sensitive and I had a strange aversion to hamburger. For some reason, I had a bump along my stomach usually flat stomach, which I can still feel somewhat. Finally, today I had some heavy bleeding and, sorry to be graphic but it was black and that has never happened to me. What is going on??? I am told that I shouldn't stop my pill and wait until things return to normal, but I want a second (or third or fourth) opinion. Thanks!

Hi chatgirl8, welcome!

A missed or late pill can trigger bleeding especially if it is during the first few cycles when your body is adjusting to the hormones in your pills. If you had you period afterward you should be ok with no worry about being pg from missing during the previous pack. What pills are you on? If you are taking a monophasic pill (one with all 21 active pills having the same dosage of hormones) and if the pill switch occurred during your active pills you are fine since you were taking the same dosage both days and there should be no difference between them. If you are on a Phasic pill with different dosages on different weeks the switch would be small and you still might notice a notice.

Black is old blood. There wasn’t enough of it to flow freely, so it moved slowly and oxidized before it came out. If there was a difference in dosage between the pills you switched that might account for the old blood. There are all sorts of things that could account for your stomach discomfort. At this point you should not stop you pills unless at the advice of your doc. I think if I were you I’d share my concerns with my doctor and be guided by his or her advice. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Good luck,

      Jill
