I was put on OTC when I was 16, and things were WONDERFUL!!! I always knew when I was going to start and end AF. My acne (which was minimal to begin with) disappeared and I had absolutely NO AF symptoms other than a icky feeling the first 2-3 days.... life was great!
Well in December 03 I could have SWORN I was pregnant, but come to find out I had several Ovarian Cysts! I was switched to Ortho Cyclen in January 04, which was to stop me from ovulating. (I could actually feel it when my body O'd and they said that's why I had developed the cysts) I ended up switching back to OTC 4 months later because of the horrible mood swings I had on OC, and my cycles are a mess!
At this point I'm looking for "other" Birth Control options. I am in a committed relationship, so I have no need to protect against STDs of HIV. I was considering the new IUD, until I saw it could stop your period all together. This may sound weird but I WANT TO BLEED EVERY MONTH! I feel it is healthy and it keeps my mind from wandering.... (I really want a baby, so any time I'm a few days late I'm out buy baby stuff, and HPTs. I completely stress myself out hoping for a +) I am now considering the cervical cap, but it says you must be refitted with every 7 lbs. you lose or gain, and I'm in the process of LOSING for my wedding, so how difficult is this re-sizing process? Also I am prone to UTIs would this be a problem?
Thanks for your help ladies!
Tiffany

I also don't know what the risks are if you have cysts with an IUD, you'll need to check with your doctor on that.
The IUD is very effective and lasts 10 years (copper) or 5 years (hormonal) or until you take it out. Check out the FAQ section for good info on IUDs.
Good luck!
I think the fit-check criteria are +/-7 lbs for a diaphragm and +/-14 lbs for a cervical cap. The refit process is a mini pelvic where your fitter checks that the cap still develops good suction on your cervix or the walls of your vagina, depending on the type cap. There is very little to it and it's over in no time at all. A diaphragm that is too large can contribute to UTIs but that should not a problem with a cervical cap. The Prentif cap http://www.cervcap.com/ is a good latex cap and FemCap http://www.femcap.com/ is a new style cap made of silicone rubber. I wear an Oves, http://www.veos.com/ a tiny disposable silicone cap which is popular in Europe. However, Oves hasn’t been approved by the FDA for sale in the U.S. so it is only available over the Internet. A copper IUD can be a good long term choice. The ParaGard, available in the U.S., is effective for 8-10 years and the Nova-T, available in Canada, is effective for 2 ½ years. Let us know what you decide, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
