I have been on Tri Vora (ortho tri) for four months now and it seems to me the nausea is getting worse every month. Is this possible? My Dr. said she would put in a perscription for estrogen low... what side effects could I get from that pill? Do you think It would be a smart switch? Is Nausea alll the time on tri vora a common symptom?

Thanks for any advice!

I dont know when you take your pills, but when I took Ortho Tri Cyclen, they made me nauseous...but taking them before bed made it better...I could take them with an antacid, and not on an empty stomach, and I slept through the worst of the nausea. My best friend also takes hers before bed, she feels the nausea is not so bad that way.

Interestingly, I just started taking Yasmin (1 week) and have had no nausea with it...When I was on the Patch...I was nauseaus 24 hours a day...and it was BAD. I just wanted to die.

Hi sapenn1, welcome!

Nausea as a side effect of beginning or switching pills is a fairly common, but not continuously and after 4 months! You doc. is right to try a pill switch. OTC-Lo (is that the one?) might work. Perhaps some OTC-Lo users will post their experiences. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Good luck,

I had nausea on OTC lo each week when the hormone dose changed but it seemed to be related to the headaches I was getting too.

And for reference, Trivora is a generic for Triphasil, which is not the same as Ortho Tri Cyclen. The middle phase of Trivora has 40mcg of estrogen, which is more than any other low-dose pill on the US market. That can definitely contribute to nausea!

As others have suggested, you may want to try taking your pills at bedtime, or with a glass of milk or a little food like saltine crackers so that the pill isn't in an empty stomach. If you try these things and the nausea persists past the first couple of months, you can ask for a pill change to something with less estrogen, which may help. And sometimes it's not the estrogen, but that particular combination of hormones and any pill would do! You'll have to see, as we all react to different pills in different ways.

Good luck!
