question? concern?

hi.. this is my first post but I'm hoping someone can offer some advice..

I've been on Ortho-TriC. for the past 4 and a half months. Before being on this pill I tried Alesse and Loestrin but both caused extreme menstrual pain and spotting. Ortho-TriC. has worked really well and I haven't experienced any problems.

Last month I was late taking my last active pill in my pack by about hours.. I usually take it at 7:30 am but this time it was almost noon. I noticed that later on that night I had some spotting. I normally start my period 3 days into sugar pills but if I remember correctly I had a light period the last 3 days of my sugar week. I had sex ( we used a condom) the night before I started my period that week.

My question is should I be concerned if i experience really light spotting a few days ago. I'm on my last week of active pills right now and I've never had spotting before. It actually was hardly anything at all but it still surprised me a lot. I'm in my last week of active pills so I'm eagerly contemplating the arrival of my period...:p

Hi magicalbird, welcome to the Birth Control Board!

I don't think you have anything to worry about. The late pill could have caused the early spotting before your last period. If you are having irregular bleeding this cycle any of several things could be causing it. Are you on a diet and loosing weight? (Burning fat releases estrogen which might be enough to cause bleeding.) or, have you begun taking large doses (1,000mg or more) of vitamin C? You might want to read “Irregular bleeding anyone?” and “Taking your pills correctly” in the FAQ folder at the top of the board. They will give you insight into bleeding issues and tips on getting the most from your pills. If the irregular bleeding continues next cycle you might want to talk to your doctor about it. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Good luck,

      Jill
