Question about tubal ligation
| Wed, 07-28-2004 - 6:10pm |
I scheduled a consultation with my Dr. to discuss having my tubes done. I have a few questions about the procedure.
1) How invasive is the surgery?
2) How long does it take to recuperate?
3) Is this an outpatient surgery where you return home the same day?
4) Did you regret having it done?
5) How long is it until you can resume sexual intercourse?
I'm a little nervous about the surgery but I know that I don't want any more babies. We have two and that's enough for us.
Thanks for any info you can give me!

This is just my two cents.
I had my tubes tied after a c section, so while I don't know what pain was from what, I do know that there was more pain and swelling than my previous c section.
I regret regret regret my tubal. I think it is hormonal. I don't know. I had it done way too young and was never informed of any possible side effects. I would rather have a bundle of kids than deal with the side effects every month for the next however many years. I have heavy, long periods. I have them whenever, and for however long that particular time. I have really bad cramps that last the whole time. I have had ovarian cysts. I am depressed over this.
There are lots of women who love their tubals and feel free by it. There are also lots of women like me. There is a tubal reversal board here at ivillage. Maybe pop over there and see what they say also. I wish I had talked to even one person before I had mine done to get an honest opinion. My dumb doctor recomended the tubal while I was pregnant with my second high risk pregnancy in fifteen months. Never told me of the procedure. No counseling, no "are you sure". When I was severely depressed after my son was born, I was told my the same doctor " noone made you have your tubes tied". I had asked her if it was normal to be so sad and when it would go away. I can tell you my son is now eight, and it has yet to go away.
Depressing? You bet. This is my reality, and it smacks me in the fact every month. Make sure that is what you want before you have it done.

I don't have any personal experience with tubal ligations, so I'm no help there!
You may also want to talk to your doctor about Essure. It's a new outpatient procedure done with a local anaesthetic where a flexible coil is inserted into each fallopian tube. Entrance to the body is through the vagina and cervix, so there are no incisions or visible scars. Over the course of three months, scar tissue grows around the coil and blocks the tube so that the egg and sperm can't meet (this is verified with a procedure 3 months after the coils are placed). At least early on, women are supposedly able to go back to work the following day and the side effects have been reported to be minimal.
Good luck!
