starting the pill mid cycle?

I just got a prescription for Yasmin. My last cycle, I started bleeding about July 16, and was done by about the 20th/21st. So I'm right smack dab in the middle of my cycle (expecting to start about 15th/16th).

Do I absolutely have to wait until I either start bleeding, or the sunday after? My PCP, mentioned that on this "you could start any day", but she talks so fast and so much I could hardly get a word in edgewise. Normally I wouldn't have any problems waiting, but, my BF will be coming into town about the same time that I should start bleeding again. And it would be nice to 1. not be bleeding, and 2. be covered by the BCP.

Any insights?

Thanks, Geo

Hi geo, welcome!

The good news is you can start any time. The rest of the story is that since you are starting mid cycle you will probably ovulate anyway. If you do ovulate you will have your period about 2 weeks later regardless of where you are in your pack. If you do, you should continue to take your pills on time every day. What I would recommend is using back-up for the entire first cycle and keep your supplies handy incase Aunt Flow shows up early, ok?

For tips on things to watch out for and getting the most from your pills read ‘Taking your pills correctly’ in the FAQs. Let us know how you’re doing, ok? If AF does show up at an inconvenient time you might try Instead, http://www.softcup.com/ a disposable menstrual cup available at most pharmacies and dark towels and candlelight.

Good luck,

Thanks for the reply...

Another question just came to mind... If I have ovulated and all, will starting Yasmin affect PMS symptoms (ie. make them less obnoxious)?

I was taking birth control a year or so ago, so I'm familiar with how to take them correctly. And I will use back up protection, and will look into the mestrual cup thing.

Thanks again,

Geo

I don't know. My guess is that if you do ov and have a regular period then probably you will experience what ever for you are typical PM symptoms. I hope any members who have experienced an actual period while on the pill will share their experiences.

Good luck,
