Back Up Methods

I know I have posted a few questions on here and I really like being a part of this board, I feel I can ask almost anything. So, my question is this......is a vasectomy considered a viable method of back up birth control? I know using a condom is the most typical form and by far, a more convenient, attainable, and inexpensive form. I am currently on Aviane (mostly to regulate my periods and lessen cramps, not to mention I've lost weight on since starting the pill), so if I were to begin having sex, I would be covered, but I have been known to take pill a few hours late (not a common occurrence, but it has happened).

Well, thanks for any response I get from this. I always know where to turn if I have questions.

A vasectamy if i am not mistaken is more effective then the pill.... So there would be no need to use backup (after all tests are done confirming there is no sperm). Alone the pill is really effective, but some like to use backup (aka condoms, spermicide, barriers) just to have peace of mind, but if they are taken correctly it is not needed. If your man were to get a vasectamy there would be no need to continue the pill for birth control purposes. You could remain on it to help PMS but it is not needed. The pill and a vasectamy you can pretty much say that nothings going to happen. If your man is willing, i'd say go for it as long as you have decided to never have anymore or not at all any children. A vasectamy CAN be reversable but it is often difficult. So just think it through and make sure its something that the two of you want. You can always freeze some of his sperm if you are unsure and still have him get a vasectamy. That way if you do change your mind, you can still have children with your significant other.

Good luck to you!

Just to emphasize what Dani already said, a vasectomy is PERMANENT birth control! Yes, it is more effective than the pill, but if he ever wants to have children, it would be out of the question. A condom is going to be your most reliable and easy backup, besides being inexpensive and readily available. I typically use spermicide as backup, it's available in prefilled applicators, film, or inserts that dissolve with body heat. Alone it's 85% effective, so if you're really looking for good quality backup, that condom has better statistics.

Good luck!
