If you think you might have a yeast infection, it's best to see your doctor to make sure! I know that OTC treatments are available, but if it's not a yeast infection and would be something else, an antifungal won't do anything, and if it's just nothing then you've wasted your money. Bacterial infections can cause strange discharge and a BAD odor and also itching and burning, those have to be treated with a prescription medication and it is also possible to have yeast and bacterial infections at the same time.

Yeast infections, at least for me, are not what you typically hear about. I don't get the itching, really, I get more burning. And I don't get copious amounts of cottage cheese-like discharge, but I will have more clumpy discharge (small pasty clumps) that smells like bread dough or beer. They don't always follow the textbook symptoms. But unless it's bad, I don't treat them. For a minor infection, the body can take care of it on its own, but if it's causing you a lot of aggravation, then I'd make an appointment with a gyn to talk about it.

And if you've got burning during intercourse, make sure you're well-lubricated! If you're not producing enough on your own (that happens sometimes when you're using a hormonal contraceptive), go out and get some artificial lubricant like Astroglide or KY Liquid. And if that doesn't do the trick and if it's not an infection of some kind, that's worth a trip to the gyn too, though a lot of gyns don't have answers for painful intercourse.

Good luck!
