About a year ago I had my period for almost three months. So my DR put me on depo prevera one shot once a month to stop the bleeding, for about 5 months. Now i'm back on the shot once every three months and have started bleeding again three weeks ago. I will bleed for a couple hours and then be fine for a couple hours. I went to see my DR and he said the depo isn't working because I have 3 cyst's on my left overy ( dont have my right one it was removed) So now he wants to give me more depo. 300 MGS to last for three months. Is that normal? I dont know if I want to get that much depo shot into me. Well let me know your thoughts please. Erin

Hi alexsmom4697, welcome!

If you are uncomfortable with the advice from your doctor it sounds like what you need is a second medical opinion. No one here can judge your exact circumstances or condition or say what treatment might be best for you. If I were you and uneasy with the course of treatment suggested I’d explore my options with another doctor. Let us know what you decide and how you're doing, ok?

Hormonal birth control will prevent _functional_ cysts (from maturing eggs), but it doesn't prevent the other types of cysts. And irregular bleeding can be VERY common with a progestin-only method.

I think I'd recommend a second opinion too! The bleeding doesn't mean the Depo isn't working, but it might mean that your body is wishing for some estrogen (it helps seal up the leaky blood vessels).

Let us know what happens, okay?
