hi, im 18 and i was having my period approx. every two weeks, so i was prescribed the pill. i took all the pills in the first pack, except for the sugar pills (i heard that you could prevent having your period if this was done). anyways, i started a second pack, and about halfway through, i started bleeding. ive been bleeding for 7 days now, and i dont know what to do. i used to be a heavy smoker, however i recently quit a few months ago. i am also sexually active. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey,

It's nothing to really worry about. I'm about 1/4 through my second pack and skipped the placebo pills too... and I've had my period for like 8 days now(although most of it is just spotting now)! From what I've read here, it depends on how your body adjusts to the hormones. Plus, my gyno said for the first few months the pill can make your period really screwy. (longer than normal..spotting...start at weird times...ect) It really sucks but it's nothing to freak out about.

Hope this eases your mind a tad!

Hi brunette51, welcome!

Congratulations on stopping smoking! I hope you can stick with it.

During the first 3 cycles on a new hormonal pill or method your body is becoming accustomed to the hormones in your pills. It's not surprising that you had irregular bleeding midway of the second pack when taking the actives back-to-back. Continue on with your pills bleeding or not. After your body adjusts you may be able to skip periods on your pill, or you may not. It is easier to skip when taking a monophasic pill, one that has the same dosage of hormones in all 21 active pills. I know it's a nuisance but bleeding should stop in a few days. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

Good luck,

      Jill

Hi Brunette51,

I had the exact same problem when I was your age, so I feel your pain! I know it takes the body a few months to adjust to the pill. I think they like you to try one kind for 3 months, then if you're still having trouble they will switch you.

My body never did like the pill. I have a lot of wierd hormone imbalances. Anyway, after trying about a million different bc pills, I went to a new doc who put me on the shot. That was over 4 years ago, and I've had no problems since.

Try sticking with it and if you still have trouble, go back to your doctor. There are tons of different bc options out there, and one should be able to regulate you.

Congrats on stopping smoking - keep it up :-)

Nikki,

When I was 17, I bled often, too. That is a sign that something is wrong. You need to see your Dr.

I was diagnosed with a condition called endometriosis, and after surgery, my Dr used birth control as a way of holding off the symptoms of my condition. I took 2 pills a day, everyday, for a year. Yes, I skipped the placebos. It was a great year! No tampons, no sheet stains and no cramps!

I believe that it is safe to skip the placebos and periods, but you need to discuss that option as well as your frequent bleeding with your ob/gyn to be certain!

Good Luck!
