Hi Everyone,

I am new to this board, but I've been surfing around for a few weeks. I am on Ortho Tricyclen Lo right now and it is TERRIBLE!!! I have experienced all of the terrible side effects and have not benefitted from it at all. My weight is a large problem, I am very very active with weight lifting and cario, but once I started the Ortho my weight shot from 120 to 140 *** big change since im only 5'0"***. And although I have a steady boyfriend who i love and loves me very much, this huge jump in weight has really affected my self esteem. I have also experienced frequent headaches and moodiness, as well as a sudden drop in sexual drive during the week that I am on the plasebos, which is very odd for me since I am a very sexual person. I was looking into Mircette or the Nuvaring, but Im open to all options. Im definately shopping around for a new form of birth control, except an IUD or getting my tubes tied. Money is really not an problem, so please let me know of anything that has helped anybody with maintaining a healthy weight and one that has lower side effects that are more...bearable. Thank you so much!!!

Hi deltadarling16, welcome!

We don't often hear about the libido decreasing during placebos. You might like NuvaRing. If I ever go back on hormones, I’m going to try the ring. If you are interested in a non-hormonal method and open to trying a vaginal barrier you might be interested in a diaphragm or cervical cap. I wear both, a cap during my intermenses period and a diaphragm for contraception and flow control during my period. I love how well that combination has worked for me in the more than 2 years I’ve been using it. Vaginal barriers do take discipline to use but with correct and consistent use they can be as effective as condoms. If you are interested in a D or C, read ‘Diaphragms and cervical caps’ in the FAQs at the top of the board. I hope you find a method that works well for you. You’ll let us know what you decide, right?

Good luck,

      Jill
