I just had my 2nd baby and I'm going for my checkup in the am. I can't decide what bc to use. I really don't like hormones because of issues with mood swings and weight gain. (I've been on orthocyclen, ortho-tricyclen, and Loestrin) I had the paragard IUD after my 1st baby, but I had horrible cramping, very heavy periods, and then it came out after 9 months. We've used condoms, but dh doesn't want to use them all the time. I've been thinking about orthotricyclen lo or the nuvaring even though they hormones. Any thoughts?

Hi Stacy191, welcome!

If I ever go back on hormones I would try NuvaRing http://www.nuvaring.com/Consumer/index.asp first. It's the lowest estrogen of any combined method in the U.S. (15 mcg) and it's very low maintenance. Or a Mirena IUD that continuously releases a tiny bit of progestin might work well as it often shortens and lightens periods. If you aren't opposed to vaginal barriers you might like a diaphragm or cervical cap. I use a cervical cap between my periods and a diaphragm for flow control and contraception during my menses and love how well that combination has worked for me. Since you are looking for alternatives look at the posts: ‘Deciding which method is right for you’ and ‘Diaphragms and cervical caps’ in the FAQs at the top of the board. I hope you find an effective method that works well for you. Let us know what you decide, ok?

Good luck,
