Well, this is what has happened to me...if anyone has absolutely anything to add or any comments, please please do tell & with absolute honesty.......what do you have to lose, right??
I was on Yasmin for 3 mths & in the 2nd month bled for about 7 wks (obviously into the 3rd month). So, the gyno put me on Orhto Novum 7/7/7. What would the logic behind this be? In other words, what is my body not getting from yasmin that caused this excessive painful, clotty bleeding that ortho novum does give me more of (ie: progestin, estrogen, some sten, i think..)
Also, this is not spotting but heavy bleeding, and clotty as well. I also have terrible cramps on my right side.
Will I get this irregular bleeding with Ortho Novum???? I know there is no guarantee but do I have a better chance on this of not irregularly bleeding???
Also, why do some people have such a problem getting their body adjusted to the pill & others not?
I am 28 years old & was on b.c.p.'s when i was about 20 in college. Could that be why my body is taking so much time to adjust...simply because it is not used to this? If Ortho Novum doesn't work.......what then???

Firstly, I wanted to point out that birth control pills have changed a lot since you were 20. The pill you took in college and the pill you are taking now have big differences in dosage. Generally, most pills are a much lower dosage today than they were 20 and even 10 years ago.
Yasmin is manufactured by Berlex industries and contains a different kind of progestin called drospirenone, which is unique to this one pill. Because Drospirenone is a relative of a diuretic called spironolactone, Yasmin is *not* reccommended for use by women who have liver, adrenal gland or kidney diseases. By changing the body's balance of water and nutrients, drospirenone can increase potassium levels, which could lead to heart problems and other health concerns. I wonder if you might fall under any of those categories?
Ortho Novum 7/7/7 does NOT contain drospirenone, perhaps this is the progestin that your Dr is trying to get you away from.
As far as experts though, everyone on this message board is just a layman; none of us are doctors so we really can't tell you exactly what is going on with your body. What you really *should* do is contact your doctor again and ask him/her all the same questions you posted for us.
Good luck, and get well soon!
Jenn
I agree with Jenn, you should ask your doctor the questions you posted here. We can only speculate about the answers. Yasmin is relatively new and at the moment still unique so you may have reacted to it differently than you will to another type of progestin so I wouldn’t let your reaction to Yasmin freak you out. I don’t think the fact that you took BCPs successfully years ago has anything to do with your tolerance for OCs now. Some women are more sensitive to different hormones or fluctuations in hormone levels than others. It depends on an individual’s body chemistry. We all change and your body chemistry has probably changed some over time. In any case, it’s going to take 2-4 cycles on a new pill to become adjusted so you can see if it will be right for you.
Take a look at the post: ‘Your pills and what’s in them…’ in the FAQs at the top of the board for the types and quantities of hormones in Yasmin and Ortho Novum 7/7/7.
If Ortho Novum 777 isn’t the one, there are a lot of alternatives. If I ever go back to hormones I will try NuvaRing first. I hope you find a method that’s right for you. Let us know how you’re doing on Ortho Novum.
Good luck,
Jill
Thank you so much for the information. I have been in contact with my dr. but am looking to switch b/c i dont' seem to get enough attention from her as I would like (she takes a coupel days to get back to me)
Jill, why do you suggest the NuvaRing for me? I am curious to know. My sister was on that & absolutely loved it. I do high intensity yoga & contort my body in many complex positions, i had a concern that it may "fall out" or rotate the ring so that it wasn't effective anymore? Could that do it??
Thank you again for all your words of wisdom & advice.
I really appreciate you getting back to me & having this board for folks like myself that need to "get it out" & get advice & guidance.
Thanks again!

I suggested it because most members posting here about it like it; because it is the method I would try if I ever go back to hormones; because it's the lowest dose of estrogen available in a combined method in the U.S. And, because it is VERY low maintenance, insert for 3 and remove for one week.

We have had posts from runners who use the ring and they say it doesn't move. And we have had (a very few) women post who have lost their rings unexpectedly over night or in the toilet. So, I think it will depend on your anatomy and muscle tone. I'm a dancer and use a diaphragm which is held in place by the rim being tucked behind the pubic bone. When I first heard about NuvaRing I thought it might be expelled during intense physical activity, but from what members say that is not the case. There is no wrong way to wear the ring and it is effective, after the very first 7 days of wearing, as long as it stays inserted, for up to 4 weeks. The ring can be removed for 3 hours at a time if it is a bother during IC, just remember to reinsert afterward.
Personally, I’m a barrier wearer. I use a cervical cap between periods and a diaphragm during menses for flow control and contraception. When I was on hormones I lost my libido. When I stopped taking them my libido returned, big time! I felt so much better… more alive and vibrant that I had on hormones. My periods are regular and not painful so I don’t need anything to regulate them and reduce discomfort. Actually, I rather enjoy my periods as I feel so feminine when I’m fertile and during menses. I know barriers aren’t for everyone as they are pretty high maintenance, are not quite as effective as hormones and take discipline to use correctly… but if you are into yoga the discipline part might not be a problem for you.
You might not like the ring but if you are looking for a hormonal method maybe your doc can give you a few free samples. I think it's certainly worth a try. Let us know what you decide, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
