Depo causing constant nausea/gas pains?

I got the Depo shot a month ago - for about 3 weeks now I've been having nausea and gas pains. Some days it's all day, other days it's just in the afternoon - but it's every day. It's got so bad that at dinner I just pick at it because my stomach is too upset to eat a lot. (Good for dieting I guess! LOL)

Just wondering if this is a normal side-effect?

I plan on getting Mirena when this shot wears off - I just got it because at the time I went to an on-call Dr. thinking it was no big deal - and they wouldn't give me the Mirena. (Long story) However my usual OB-GYN says I *can* get Mirena. So instead of waiting longer, I just got the Depo. shot and at the end of 12 weeks I'll go back to my usual OB-GYN to get Mirena. Whew! (What a trip that was to even get my birth control in the first place! After they told me I couldn't get Mirena, I had to get a PG test to get the Depo shot - no big deal. But it came back POSITIVE. So I had to go for a blood draw, negative. Whew! What a day though! LOL)

THANKS ladies!

Hi bethanbabes, welcome!

It sounds to me as though what you are experiencing might be caused by Depo. The patient information on the Depo-Provera website: http://www.depoprovera.com/index.asp# has this to say about possible side effects:

“In a clinical study of over 3,900 women who used DEPO-PROVERA Contraceptive Injection for up to 7 years, some women reported the following effects that may or may not have been related to their use of DEPO-PROVERA Contraceptive Injection:

• breast swelling

• irregular menstrual and bleeding tenderness

• amenorrhea

• bloating

• headache

• swelling of the hands or feet

• nervousness

• backache

• abdominal cramps

• depression

• dizziness

• insomnia

• weakness or fatigue

• acne

• decreased sexual desire

• pelvic pain

• leg cramps

• no hair growth or excessive hair loss

• nausea

• rash

• rash

• vaginal discharge or irritation

• hot flashes

• joint pain”

If I were you I’d call my doctor and see what s/he has to say about the symptoms you are having. I hope you’re feeling better soon. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Hugs,

hello, i just got off the depo-shot and i was on it since i delivered my daughter in 1997 and it was awful and i was having so many things going wrong with me and the doctors couldn't find anything wrong with me so i thought that it was just me and i got off it in oct of 2003 and got on the patch well 4 months into the patch i had to go to the er cause i felt i was going crazy i was so sick and getting really bad hot flashes well it turned out that i had a allergic reation to the patch so the doctor put me back on depo in march, well i still felt awful and this last time i got put on depo i gained weight and all in the tummy area, well i was supposed to go get my shot on 9/2 and i never went back i decided to let my body take a break, the depo was horrible i looked preg. and i always thought i was. your doing the best thing by getting off depo, and yes i did get the gas , stomach aches, constantly sick to my stomach, throwing up in every morning.
