So - it's the 11th day of my pill cycle (Alesse, this is the 5th month i've been on it)

and I'm bleeding. have been for about 36 hours. it's heavy enough to compare it to my period.

I think I know why - on the Sunday that I started my new pill pack, i was out of town and didn't have my pills with me - so i took my first pill of the new pack about 12 hours late. but have been taking them every morning since - i called my dr.'s office and the nurse said the bleeding is probably caused by taking the pill late - but it's not that light of bleeding and has been going on now for a day and a half... i'm a little worried. should I be??

Hi mirandarocks, welcome!

The first pill of a pack is a bad one to be taking late. Twelve hours late is considered a miss and you went more than 7 24-hour days between active pills which can substantially reduce your protection. I hope you used back-up for the first 7 days of active pills in the new pack. Bleeding starting 8-9 days after a hormonal fluctuation like that seems a bit late to me but we are all different so anything is possible. Have you been taking your pills on time (+/-2 hrs. of your normal pill time)? Are you dieting (and loosing weight) or taking 1,000mg of vitamin C daily? Those are the sorts of things than can confuse your body and bring on irregular bleeding. Read 'Irregular Bleeding anyone...' in the FAQs at the top of the board for more about bleeding issues. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

Good luck,

Thanks Jill! How long do you think this will last? I really thought it would be over quickly - but it's been two days almost... when should i get worried?

Have you been doing any of the things I mentioned (or have you started dietary supplements - which can be a no-no?) that might have brought on the bleeding? If not, it might stop in a day or so or it might continue on for a while until your body becomes adjusted and the hormones regain control.
