Tubal side effects?

I'm currently pregnant with our "last" child and have already spoken with my dr about doing a tubal when I deliver (c-section due to problems with last pregnancy). I would just like to hear some "real" experiences from others as my best friend just told me not to do it - hers was done in May and she said it was more difficult physically than she was lead to believe. DH is more than willing to have a vasectomy, I just thought it would be easier for me since I was already going to be cut open...not that the thought of "double protection" hasn't crossed my mind... :)

While you waiting for members to respond you can search the archives for other discussions about TLs. Just type tubal ligation into the search box at the top of the board. Also, you might want to take a look at: Tubal Sterilization for Women: 'Getting Your Tubes Tied' http://www.contraceptiononline.org/contrareport/article01.cfm?art=263
Since you mentioned the possibility of double protection here are two links to information about vasectomies.

I did some research on both the tubal and a vasectomy before my husband and I reached our decision. Since you are planning on having the tubal after you have your c-section it should be a breeze. I am not sure what your friend meant by phsyically difficult. Having it done right after a c-section would be less difficult than having it done any other time. As you said, you will already be opened up and the fallopian tubes will be easier to get to due to your enlarged uterus pushing other organs aside(as you know, it slowy goes back to its original size). Recovering from the pregnancy and c-secton will be your primary discomfort; not the tubal.
We chose the vasectomy. I was not pregnant at the time and the risks are lower as opposed to a tubal. And it is much cheaper! I think our grand total was less than $40 with insurance paying 80%. My husband had not one problem; only a little discomfort from the procedure for the first couple days. Our sex life has never been better! As far as risk of heart disease, that theory was initiated in the 70's and has been repeatedly dissproven. And the risk of testicular cancer is extremely vague, its not even mentioned.
Good luck with your decision!
