in the interest of saving myself potentially many $30 copays, i was wondering if i could just ask the nurse at the gyn office if the dr. would be willing to approve an iud for a patient who has never had a child? i have recently relocated and don't have a gyn in my area, so i need to find a new one anyway.

thanks!

Search around on the board (put IUD in the search line). A lot of people have been talking about IUDs on here and quite a few of them had never had children, so it can be done... Someone who actually has experience with IUDs should respond to this eventually...

I have never had children & I got a Mirena on Monday. I had an appt for 2 months which was on Thurs the 26th. With the dr. knowing I have never had children beforehand, she still had me come in on the 26th. I got there, talked to her for literally about 5 mins in her office & she sent me on my way with a prescription for a pill to dilate my cervix (which I don't know how well it actually worked). So in short I paid 2-$25 copays & $10 for 1 pill. While this is still cheaper than my $33 copay monthly for bcp's, it was still annoying as hell to me. Why couldn't the nurse have clued me in about this before my first appt? I could have got my prescription & saved the second office visit. Anyways yes I would get all information from the nurse before you go in. Ask her if you will need that pill and if so have her call it in for you. Good luck to you & make sure you take pain releiver before your visit. B

The doctor made me come in for a consultation beforehand too. He wasn't too into the idea of giving me an IUD since I'd never given birth, and wanted to discuss my other options. I was a good candidate for an IUD, married and no other sexual partners. I've tried just about every other option out there already and knew without a doubt that an IUD was what I wanted. We talked for a few minutes, then he told me to call to schedule the insertion for when my period started. It was only a $10 copay but I was still a bit annoyed, since the whole conversation could have been handled easily on the phone.

I have the copper IUD with no children.

I had a consultation with my doctor first and I am glad I did. We talked about the two different IUDs and which would be better for me. She went over the procedure and what to expect, answered all my questions (which I always prefer in person vs over the phone). I was very much as ease when I went back to have it put in when my period started. My doctor would have put it in that day if I was on my period. If you want to reduce the number of copays you could try to schedule your appt on your period, that might help.

Good Luck I hope you like your IUD as much as I like mine.

My Dr almost refuses to let me get an IUD. Instead, they keep changing my BC around. Her reasoning is because I have never had a child, (but want them) and it's easier to insert into someone that has had a child. And there is a very small percent that it can block/scar your fallopian tubes, making it hard to concieve later on. Kind of crappy, I think it should be our choice, not our DR's for what kind of bc we want to use!

I agree!

I was very lucky that my doctor had no trouble with my decision. She agreed that the chances are very small of bad things happening and had done many succesful IUDs. I am so happy with my IUD. Good Luck

It is your choice. If your doctor won't cooperate with you, then find another doctor. You don't have to settle for a doctor who won't listen to you. I haven't had a child and I had no trouble with getting an IUD inserted.
