Hi there,

I am expecting triplets in a few weeks and am going to get my tubes tied. The question I have for anyone who can answer is: Does your body feel the same after you get it done? Can you tell the difference as if was not ever done. Hormones, your periods, etc. I am nervous about the whole thing. But need to get it done because I don't want to have anymore children.

Thank you.

Hi kismet29, welcome!

Congratulations on triplets! Woo-hoo!!!

While you are waiting for a reply you might search the archives to see if there are any posts on the subject. I don’t think we have very many, if any members who have posted about undesirable after effects of the operation, other than an unanticipated pregnancy. Typing ‘Tubal Ligation Syndrome’ into Google resulted in 828 hits. If I were you this is a question I would want to ask my doctor. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Good luck,

Congratulations! My goodness....triplets should be an experience for the whole family! I'm half of a set of identical twins, and I think we were a handful enough, but there's something that's really special about being a multiple.

A lot of doctors, I think, discredit post-tubal syndrome, but given the number of places to read when you search for it, I wouldn't know what to think. Have you thought about Essure? Would your husband be agreeable to getting a vasectomy? Essure is an outpatient procedure where a flexible coil is inserted in each fallopian tube. Over 3 or so months scar tissue grows around the coils and blocks the fallopian tube, theoretically preventing egg and sperm from ever meeting. It's about as effective as a tubal, but without the incision. Most women, according to the website (www.essure.com), go back to work (or regular life, I guess) in a day or two. Ask your doctor about it, he may have some feelings one way or another on the subject.

Good luck! We don't have too many women here with tubals, but maybe there are some lurking around that will see this! And congratulations!

I have never had a tubal but know those who have. Some say nothing is different, others say their periods are irregular. But, on the other hand, whos to tell if it is from the tubal or not? Are you having the tubal immediately after a c-section? If so, the procedure will be a breeze. You will mostly be recovering from the birth of your children. Otherwise, they will go in using laproscopy and the recovery is a few days I think(?). Best wishes on the birth of your triplets!

I'm just curious as to how a tubal ligation works. Obviously since the ovaries are still there, there are still periods. But if the tubes are tied, what happens to the eggs? Do they just build up? And also, how is it possible for an egg to get through and become pregnant? I have a similar question about vasectomies. If semen still comes out during ejaculation, what happens to all of the sperm?

Sorry I don't have any information for you...but reading all of this made me curious :o)

To answer these questions:

"But if the tubes are tied, what happens to the eggs? Do they just build up? And also, how is it possible for an egg to get through and become pregnant?"

The eggs are absorbed by your body. Sometimes the fallopian tubes can grow back together and an egg can then get through.

"If semen still comes out during ejaculation, what happens to all of the sperm?"

The point at where the semen and sperm enter the vas defrens is different. Therefore, men with vasectomies still produce semen but it does not contain sperm. The sperm are absorbed by the mans body.

Hi, I had a tubal ligation the day after my fourth child was born. At first my periods seemed heavy. However it has been two years and I dont feel any differnt. My periods are the same as before. My cycles were irregular before I had the tubal and that is still the same. I dont regret having my tubal after 4 kids I knew it was the right decision. I am happy that I finally dont have to worry about birth control and pregnancy. With irregular periods I spent alot of money on pg test :) My only advice is to make sure you are comfortable with your decision. My tubal is irreversable. My tubes were cut, tied and burned. No chance of the tubes repairing themselves.

Good Luck with your decision
