Slight bleeding....mini pill Help!!!!

Ok, I have been on the mini pill since DS was 6 weeks old. He just turned a year yesterday. I have been taking the pill every night at the same time and haven't missed one since Aug 6th. Took the missed one the next day. I have been having cramping on and off for the past week and half or so stomach and back cramps. I just went to the rest room and when I wiped I noticed some blood. It was slight, but enough for me to wipe again and double check. There was still blood.

2 questions: Should I be worried that there is something wrong and is there a possibility I could be pregnant? Yes we did have sex the week of me missing that pill, but I have taken 2 pregnancy test and they both came back negative.

I know not to worry, but since I have never had break through bleeding with the mini pill, it is a little scary.

Thanks so much

Maggie

Hi maggiehayek, welcome!

It sounds as though you are PMSing as your period approaches. If you have been using a POP while exclusively breastfeeding and haven't had a period since your last child then perhaps you are beginning to cycle again. By itself a pop will suppress ovulation only about 50% of the time. I think the POP manufacturers say that if you aren't BFing that you should expect a period about every 45 days. If you miss a progestin-only-pill you should use back-up for at least the next 48 hours. No method of contraception is 100% effective so there is always a possibility. However, bleeding is not usually a sign of pregnancy. Most pregnancy tests are effective about 2 weeks after the event of concern. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

Good luck,

I was on the mini pill for about 8 months after the birth of my son...For some women it can make your period somewhat unpredictable-heavy or just spotting....it might come at it's usual time or you might skip a few....If you still don't get your period in another week or so I'd test again....A trip to the dr might be a good idea too-to put your mind at rest...good luck

I took a test again this morning and it was negative. Glad for that. I haven't had a period at all since my DS was born(Sept. 5th, 2003). I still breastfeed at least 3 times a day. Trying to wean him. I am not bleeding anymore, but have said that if I do bleed again, I will call the doctor. Thanks for the posts.
