i was wondering what the risks of preg was if you are having unprotected sex on your period? my best friends is kinda sleeping with her man with out condoms... he never finishes in her but i know pre can still get her. she isn't on BC, they don't use Condoms...and she was on her period the last couple times so she had a tampon in... is she at really big risk right now? Should i take her to a Doc soon cuz i know she won't go on her own! Thanks bunches, Melie

If you're charting your cycles with the sympto-thermal method and you know that you ovulated 12-16 days before your period, the first five days of your period are considered safe days to have sex. But you have to know that its a true period, which you can only identify by charting. Doesn't sound like she is doing that so she is at risk.

It is rare, but a woman can get pregnant any time of the month. Most babies are conceived around the window of 10-17 days after the menstral flow starts. But conception can occur anytime. Your friend needs to see a doctor to be checked for STDs and pregnancy. If she is going to have sex, she needs to protect herself. I am almost 40, but I got pregnant and caught a STD at 18. So, I know from personal experience that it does happen.

You can get pregnant during your period...Rare,but it happens...and having sex with a tampon in--if there's full penetration--that can cause problems too--it can push the tampon further back where it'll have to be removed by a dr....

If she ovulates early in her cycle (which she doesn't know), then she is absolutely putting herself at great risk for pregnancy. While women don't actually get pregnant during their periods, sperm can live several days in fertile conditions and it's very possible to get pregnant from sex during a period if she ovulates early.

Having sex with a tampon in is BAD. She can be more susceptible to infection this way due to tissue damage from moving around a tampon. She wouldn't feel the damage, as there aren't as many nerve endings that high, but that's a recipe for infection and the tampon offers no protection.

STD's are a HUGE issue to be concerned about if both parties haven't tested clean. Condoms are the only way people can protect themselves from STD's, and a lot of people won't be symptomatic (show symptoms) right away but can still transmit the disease. Not all STD's can be cured, some can affect future fertility, and diseases like HIV can take her life.

Away she goes to the doctor! She needs to get herself tested for STD's and to get properly acquainted with all of the RELIABLE forms of birth control that are available to her and really think about whether an unplanned pregnancy and/or a disease are what she wants for her future. It seems like fun right now, but the reality of a life-changing consequence is definitely not going to be fun.

Just thought I'd clarify what I said about the five day rule. Its actually a little more complicated than that. If you have a history of short cycles, only the first 3 days of your period are considered safe days. This is the only part of FAM that uses the past to predict the future, but ovulating before cycle day 10 is rare. So its still a conservative FAM rule that takes into consideration how long sperm can live. I'm even more conservative than that though and don't risk sex until my period is over and I know for sure what is going on :) Anyways, just didn't want someone to use what I said incorrectly and think they were safe when they aren't.
