Hello, Im new to the board. I had a quick question. I am getting married on November 6th of this year. My fiance and I live together, but decided when we set our date in March that we would wait to have sex until we got married from then on. I've been on ortho tricyclen since I was 15 and heard that its good to stop taking it about every 5 years. I decided to stop because it would be a waste of money for no reason. I usually got my period the 3rd week of the month and after getting off the bc it came a week later. It has been like this for the 3 months that I've gotten my period. My question is I want to get back on it after my period this month so that when we start having sex again that I dont have to worry about using a backup method for the first month. My only concern is that starting again will switch my start date and push me into the week of my wedding. Can I start my new pack of pills earlier to push back my period start date or will that totally confuse my body? Any one with information I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I just wanted to say "good for you!" and give you a big pat on the back for abstaining for eight months! I think it will be so well worth the wait. I'm getting married July 23/05 and my fiance and I are planning to abstain for 2 months prior. I'd like to have abstained for a year, but 2 months is the most he'll aggree to! Anyway!
If you started the pill on Sunday, Sept. 12th you'd be good to go for avoiding your period on your wedding day. Your first pack of active pills would end on Saturday, Oct. 2nd and your second pack of active pills would end on October 30th. That gives you October 31 to November 5th to finish your period; 6 days after your last active pill. Then you start your third active pack on Sunday, November 7th. If that's too close to you, then start the pill again on Sunday, Sept 26th (two weeks later) and then it will push everything else 2 weeks later. By the time your wedding came, you would be on day 14 of active pills on your wedding day.
No matter where you are in your cycle, you can start on any given Sunday in a month. All you have to do is remember to use back up during that first month of pills and you're good to go. But, in your case, you wont even need the back up because you'll be abstaning. By the time you get to day 14 (your wedding day) of your second pack, you are *fully* protected.
Hope this helped and good luck with everything!
Jenn
Congratulations on your upcoming marriage!
You can begin your pills at any time in your cycle. However, it is easiest on your body if you begin at the beginning or just after your period when your natural hormones are at their lowest levels. Another thing is that beginning your pills just after your period is reassurance that you aren't pregnant before you start taking them. If pregnancy isn't a possibility then you can begin at any time.
If you begin mid cycle, there is a possibility that you will ovulate that cycle. If you do ovulate, your period will come about 2 weeks later, regardless of where you are in the pack. And, even though you intend to abstain until after your wedding... anyone beginning OCs after day one of their period should use back-up for at least the first 7 days of active pills and preferably the entire first cycle while learning to take their pills correctly. Thanks for posting. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?
Take care,
Jill
