I'd like everyone's opinion on what you would do if you were in my shoes.

I chose to discontinue Desogen this month while I have a medical procedure, and in the meantime I got some blood test results back and there were some big problems.

I'm confused - why shouldn't you have been able to ovulate?? Because it sounds perfectly normal to me. When you go off BC, you usually ovulate and go back to periods right away...

They said my hormonal levels were so abnormal that I wasn't going to get a period.

Hi ariane05, welcome back!

Well, someone was wrong! If, according to the tests, your levels were so out of balance that you shouldn't have ovulated, then were the tests wrong? It wouldn't be the first time labs have provided incorrect results. You might want to ask about being retested. I agree with Susan that it is quite likely that (under normal circumstances) a woman will ovulate her first cycle off OCs.

If the test results are correct, and your doctor is also right that you shouldn't have ovulated, then I think what you experienced is something analogous to a women who had a tubal or whose DH had a Vasectomy becoming pregnant. That can happen, nothing is 100%.

As far as using back-up in addition to hormonal contraceptives, if BCPs have worked well for you in the past and you're comfortable with using them alone fine. If you would feel more confident using back-up then do it. A contraceptive sponge might be the easiest thing to use if you hate condoms, like most of us do. Or, a diaphragm or cervical cap would work well too, but they are more trouble to use. Let us know what you decide, ok?

Take care,

It's not uncommon for hormone tests to give....less than accurate..results. Lots of perimenopausal women with hot flashes and fatigue and weird periods will test with perfectly normal hormone levels on one day and may test menopausal later. I wouldn't be surprised if your hormones were wacky because you just quit the pill and things are trying to get back to normal. Doctors don't always want to admit that they don't have all the answers. ;)

For right now, I wouldn't assume that you're vulnerable when you're on the pill. If you're concerned, though, you might wait another month or two and have the hormone tests redone to see if the levels are still abnormal or to see if everything is cool.

Please keep us posted, okay?

Yeah I have a history of these hormone problems and its to be expected with my underlying conditions that they will get worse.
