The Ring

I have been on several types of pills and they all make me sick, so my gyno wants me to try the ring. I was thinking and would there really be a difference. Either way I am getting the same kind of hormones. I know there are different doses, but I have been on several different hormone doses from the pill. So my first question is, If the pill makes me sick, what will the difference be with the ring? And my second question is when you have sex isn't there a big chance that the ring will get pulled out? Or are you supposed to take it out before you have sex? Which would kinda be a drag. Thanks.

Cassie,

I have been using the Nuvaring for 2 months now and I love it. I was also unable to tolerate the pill. It literally made me crazy. I felt bad and I was sooooo mean. It was really ugly.

You do not have to take the ring out when you have sex. My DH says he can't feel it either. The first few days I had it in I was constantly checking to make sure it was still there. I have had no noticeable side effects.

I would try it and see how it works for you.

Hi s1r1w1, welcome back!

The ring is comparable in price to a pack of pills, about $35 USD, undiscounted. But, it will depend on if you can buy them at a discount store Costco / Wal-Mart and if you have insurance that covers them. Ok?

Good luck,

All pills are not created equal! That's something that some doctors either don't recognize or gloss over, but unless you've taken every kind of pill on the market, there's a chance that there is one that _won't_ make you sick, however you define that. You also have to consider the delivery of the hormones--there's a difference between ingesting hormones into the digestive system and then metabolizing them in the liver and absorbing the hormones directly into the bloodstream already ready to use without that first pass through the liver. The progestin in the ring has already been broken down from how it would be delivered if it were a pill, and sometimes that step can make a difference in a woman's reaction to it.

I've been using the ring for almost two years after having trouble with two formulations of pills. I really like it--you don't have to remove it for sex, though you have that option if it bothers you to have sex with it in. We've only removed it once or twice, typically it's not a problem.

At my local Osco, the ring, without insurance, is about $38-39. It's a little more expensive than some pills, but it's totally worth the extra couple of bucks to me for the convenience and the lowest estrogen dose on the US market.
