Thrush and irregular period

Hi, guys,

I was wondering if anyone can explain this. I had a thrush infection this week and was treated for it with a tablet of Diflucane. Then, the second day I started to bleed, like a period, but lighter. It's been now 3-4 days, this looks like a period, but not sure if it is one. I am on the mini-pill, estrogen only, and had a period just two weeks ago. Can an infection start a period? and is this normal, just two weeks since my last period?

Many thanks for any opinions, guys!

Hi ariadna2004, welcome!

Are you on a mini-pill for contraception or HRT? If I were you I'd ask my doctor about your bleeding issues. I think Diflucan can interact with hormonal contraceptives so if I were you I’d talk to my doctor who prescribed the mini-pill and see what s/he advises. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Good luck,

Estrogen-only pills are not used as birth control pills, they can only be given to women without uteruses! Did you mean a progestin-only pill?

If you're still having periods on the mini pill, then you're still ovulating. If that's the case, this is likely to be random bleeding and not necessarily a period. You might have more bleeding at your regularly scheduled time, as it should take more than a couple of weeks to ovulate and have another period. Irregular bleeding is very common with POP's!

I'm not sure if that helps, but.....

Jill,

Thanks for this, I did call the doctor, and she said that if I am not pregnant, there is nothing to worry about, can be a 'normal' hormonal unbalance. But it is quite odd, yu might be right, it may be that the pill for treating the thrush reacts with the contraceptive.

Thanks again and best wishes,

Hi, Judie,

Thanks for this, it is a progestogen-only pill, sorry, I wrote that in a rush. I do have periods, but it was always regular for the last three years since I am on the pill. so when I took the treatment for thrush and developed a period the second day, I became worried, as this is just two weeks since my last period. It may be that the thursh pill determined a hormonal unbalance, but I am still worried, as the period is getting heavier, rather than lighter, after 5 days since treating the infection. The doc said not to worry, if I am not pregnant though.

Thanks again for your time to answer,

Ariadna
