I've been taking birth control pills for almost 3 yrs and now my libido is gone! I'm gonna switch to IUD, but I wanna know if the IUD lower the libido at all, even the one with the hormones (MIRENA,I think).

Anyone who has an IUD right now have any problems with low libido?

Thank you for any reply. :-)

I have the copper IUD withOUT hormones. My libido has come back to normal now after being on BCPs for too many years.

I can't help ya with the Mirena IUD, but there are a few on here who I am sure will be along shortly.

I have had the mirena since 8/30 after being on bcp's for 11 yrs. Pretty much the last 3 yrs I have had no libido at all! My hubby was not thrilled. After 1 week on mirena & off the pill it made a huge difference. Needless to say my husband is more than thrilled now! Mirena was a great change for me! I only wish I had done it sooner....B

Thank you everyone for the info. Now I have another question, it's a little personal, but I really wanna know. Can you do all the crazy sexual possitions and use sex toys and all that with an IUD on? I'm a bit on the crazy side, and I wanna feel free to do just go crazy...lol

Thank you for any reply. :-)

I've had the mirena for over a year now and haven't noticed a change in libido--either way....I love it!

Hi mafedeso, welcome!

>> Can you do all the crazy sexual possitions and use sex toys and all that with an IUD on?

I don’t think there should be any problem with positions. The IUD itself is totally inside the cervix with only the strings protruding. With toys you might want to watch that the IUD strings don't get caught in a part of the toy so that when the toy is removed it pulls on the strings. I'm no expert on what toys are out there but one toy that comes to mind is Ben Wa Balls that are connected by a string. While IUD strings usually soften and wrap around the cervix it seems to me that there is the possibility of the IUD strings and the cord connecting the balls might tangle... just a thought. You’ll let us know what you decide, right?

Take care,

Thank you, Jill. I will let you guys know what I decide. I don't know if I should try a lower hormone pill, or just go for the IUD. I just want my libido back. :-)

My DBF has said that he can feelt he strings during IC and that it isn't pleasant. One time he said it hurt him quite a bit and just recently he said he could feel the strings, but it wasn't as bad (mostly because the strings weren't hitting in the same spot repeatedly). I am hoping the strings will get softer (or are they really "thing wires"? and in that case won't get softer...).

I think you should be able to carry on with your normal sex life and use of toys. I would just talk to the doctor who will be inserting it. I know my doctor told me that he cut the strings a bit shorter than normal so there would be less of a change that a tampon might accidentally catch on the strings and pull the IUD out.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I have heard the strings should get softer in time, but I think your problem is that the doctor cut them so short. My doctor told me he always leaves them a little longer so that they won't poke out like bristles and cause problems during sex. He's heard that complaint before with strings that are too short.

Thanx for your advice Kelly. But I'm not sure if they are too short.. I mean, I can feel that the "strings" (although, I believe they are metal and won't get softer) curve up around my cervix.. I just think DBF is a extra sensitive..

But if it doesn't get any better I will definately talk to my doctor about it.

I have a copper IUD and I've found that my libido is normal to what it was pre-IUD. I found that BCP's lowered my libido level condsiderably and that's why I did not get the Mirina IUD. Didn't want anything to do with hormones. The Upside was that my (Then) SO could feel the string and it drove him crazy... He loved the feel of it poking him during I/C. He really seemed to enjoy the strings poking him and said that it made I/C better. I guess all guys are a little bit different. Hope everything works out for you.
